The new “UIQ 3: The Complete Guide” aims to be the most comprehensive guide available for developing UIQ 3 applications, yet it is a book with a twist. The printed version of the book will be available from Symbian Press during Q1 2008, however the first four chapters are available now in Wiki format on UIQ Technology’s Developer Community website.

I dont know guys… the more I think about this, the more headache I got… I mean, there’s a lot of potential in UIQ 3 actually but there are not many applications released compared to S60 3rd Ed or even WinMob. I want to talk about a missing application which might not be useful for general masses but for some fans, they cant live without it. Database, ladies and gentlemen… There’s still no database app for UIQ 3. Yeah… there’s Epocware Handy Safe but it’s not as extensive as DDH Software’s HanDBase. Handy Safe is more like a secure password and sensitive information manager, not a full database app where you can create links to other data and do some sort of filtering and sorting. (more…)

The deal between Sony Ericsson to co-own UIQ Technology, together with Motorola, has received blessing from the European Union and it seems the approval is the last hurdle before the split-ownership begins. With Sony Ericsson’s strong UIQ developer community and Motorola’s innovative designs, UIQ’s future catalogue looks interesting. Time will tell… Full news after the jump.

Simply Symbian managed to talk with Elisabet Melin, who among others, explained the situation inside UIQ Technology nowadays. With Motorola now owns half of UIQ Technology equity together with Sony Ericsson, they have expanded their workforce and has around 350 employees. They also have more tasks to do not only to prepare for releasing new UIQ version but also maintaining compatibility with the older versions to ensure applications and frameworks are future proof.
An interesting read I would say, read the whole interview at : http://www.simplysymbian.com/2007/12/13/talking-with-elisabet-melin-vice-president-of-marketing-at-uiq/

According to Symbian official website, Demand Paging enables more efficient usage of RAM by loading read-only code and data only when required (“on demand”).
What is Demand Paging?
-Data must be copied from NAND Flash memory into RAM in order to execute
-Previously, Symbian OS copied entire DLLs into RAM when they were needed
-Demand Paging means that only the required “page” within the DLL is loaded into RAM
-Demand Paging only loads a page into RAM when a reference is made to it (paging on demand)
-Loading by page means less RAM is used at any one time

As a person who lives and breathe with Opera browsers, I welcomed the announcement about the new Opera Mobile 9 to be available in early next year. Looking at the desktop version (Opear 9.50b aka Kestrel) which uses a new rendering engine, honestly, I cant wait to see Opera Mobile 9 in action. And if the Opera Mini 4 to be used as a benchmark, then the new Opera Mobile 9 should be THE mobile browser we should be looking forward to.
