Richard Bloor talks to Ulf Wretling, general manager and head of the developer program and communications at Sony Ericsson

Another interesting information about how UIQ future will look like. In the interview, Ulf said about “We will continue to ship UIQ phones for quite some time and Motorola has publicly said it will do the same. So nothing will be stopping immediately. Over time of course we will be moving to the Symbian Foundation platform. This means that UIQ Technology will need to find a new place in the ecosystem. We are currently talking to Motorola and the management of UIQ Technology and exploring different options to find the best role UIQ Technology can play.”… Can anybody read between the li(n)es?… You can read the whole interview at SymbianOne.

Navizon: Peer to Peer wireless positioning

Let´s forget the sad stuff for a while. Here´s navizon, a pretty cool positioning software that mixes real gps with “virtual” gps (triangulation stuff, like google maps mobile)

Navizon is a software-only wireless positioning system that triangulates signals broadcasted from Wi-Fi access points and Cellular towers to help the users find their way in most major metropolitan areas worldwide.

The Navizon network is based on a collaborative database. Members with a GPS device can use Navizon to map the Wi-Fi and cellular landscape in their neighborhoods. Once they synchronize their data, it is made available to all the other users of the network. This way, users who don’t have a GPS device can benefit from a positioning system. And it’s free for personal use!

Navizon works on most wireless devices equipped with Wi-Fi and/or cellular phone (GSM/CDMA

NS Basic/Symbian OS Beta Testers wanted

GRUIQ (Thanks man!) sent me an email informing me about the availability of the first beta of NSBasic for Symbian. Here’s the info :

We’re ready to start beta testing NS Basic/Symbian OS with a limited
number of beta testers. The product is looking pretty good for a first beta.

Requirements are:

1. A Symbian OS device, running UIQ 3 or S60 3rd Edition.
2. Time to do testing. Be honest - we only have a limited number of slots.

If you already have an NS Basic/Palm app, you can start by bring that over.

People who are interested should send an email to beta@…. Be
sure to include what device you have in your email.

Thanks!

Digia @Web Screenshots Tour

The moment of truth is finally here. After our exclusive @Web coverage and interview with the team who developed @Web, we now present you with the screenshots tour for your eyes’ feast. I will also present my initial thoughts on the first public beta of @Web.

This is NOT a REVIEW but a walkthrough of the new @Web browser developed by Digia. For your guys’ information, Digia is a long time Symbian veteran and have contributed a lot in the Symbian universe. And Digia was the ORIGINAL INVENTOR of what is now known as S60, which Nokia bought over. But that is not suitable to be discussed here.

Another sad news… UIQ Announce Plans To Layoff 200 Employees

AAS reported that UIQ have announced plans to layoff of 200 employees (reports BLT.se). Currently the majority of the 375 staff are employed in the Ronneby offices, with the balance of staff in two foreign offices in London and Budapest. These offices will probably close. Further detailsat AAS.

Rafe’s editorial explains a lot

Our good friend at AAS, Rafe Blandford, wrote a long editorial piece where he explains his thoughts and concerns about the newly announced Symbian Foundation. After reading it, I fully agreed that the move is inevitable and I was saddened to read the following sentences “For Sony Ericsson, Motorola and UIQ Technology, it is the end of an era. UIQ as a software platform will effectively disappear. UIQ’s fans will be sad to see it go; it remains, arguably, the most technically elegant of the Symbian software platforms.” It’s really sad, but true… Get a cup of coffee and read the piece, it’s interesting…
