Gruiq.net - Free resources for UIQ

Now this is an additional post actually. It wont be long. For those wanting to find UIQ resources on one place, go to http://www.gruiq.net/ where you can find free ressources for your UIQ smartphones. From the old UIQ 2 to the latest UIQ 3, there’s some free stuf for everyone. Made by people who loved UIQ to all UIQ lovers  It’s written in French but the page layout is simple to navigate and wont take you long to understand what it offers.

Cheers! ;-)

Filemanager

During the old UIQ 2 days (P800, P900 & P910), there are a couple pf filemanagers available to users. Applications like SymbianWare’s FileMan, eFile, UIQ’s own QFileMan, Xplorer4U and most importantly, my favourite filemanager for UIQ 2 was SMan’s Filemanager module.

For UIQ 3, the scenario has changed, with the new PlatSec introduced in Symbian OS v9 onwards, applications cant access restricted functions unless they are digitally Symbian Signed. This move is seen as necessary to prevent unnecessary access to system functions but at the cost of slower application development. There’s no more applications with advanced functions like SMan and Tracker and TaskMan, all need to be Symbian Signed.

This brings us UIQ 3 users with fewer choices for unlimited filemanaging functions. Yes, our beloved UIQ 3 smartphones did come with a filemanager but it is too basic and too many things missing. For example, we cant use it to access hidden files or get a peep at the System folders, it’s too basic that I forgot the last time I used it…

So, what are our choices for managing files in our UIQ 3 smartphones? There are X-Plore and SwissManager (which is actually a general utility with lots of functions including filemanager). Well, maybe there are others that I have not found yet but I have these 2 installed in my P990 and used them everyday. If you have time, you can read my opinion about X-Plore on AllAboutSymbian.Com.

This is another area where I think UIQ 3 developers can produce more apps. Looking at S60 3rd Edition filemanagers, it has many alternatives for users to choose like ActiveFile, FExplorer, YBrowser, SysExplorer, Explorer…

What do you guys think? Any other applications for managing files and folders that you found out there and deserve a mention? And also, what is your favourite filemanager for UIQ 3?

UIQ open-source software - Wiki

There are some really good UIQ resources on the internet and instead of blog, this time, I decided to feature the UIQ open-source software wiki because it contains some very unique UIQ 3 information nowhere to be found on other places. Although the pages are text only (no fun aint it!) but it’s searchable, and most importantly, useful infos.

For example, look at the P990 Firmware list, it presents P990 firmware versions in a table complete with colours.

If you want to know more about UIQ and UIQ 3, it’s a good place to start :D Have you visited the wiki yet? What is your opinion?

Wikipedia in your smartphone! Is now possible

If you’re an info-hungry person like me who’s always wanting something to read no matter where you are, then you should check this out. Wikipedia is a new phenomenon started a few years ago where a free encyclopaedia is available for everyone and it grows bigger because users added more and more information into it’s database. There’s a personal touch to it. As for myself, I frequented Wikipedia for almost everything. From historical facts to fictional characters in books, most of the time, I can find some reliable information off Wikipedia. It will be really great if I can put Wikipedia inside my smartphone.

The Series 60 Weblogs posted the Symbian Wikipedia project, available as a free download originally for S60 phone. The latest release of Symbian Wikipedia incorporates over 8,500 full-color images (about 3.5 unique images per article!).

Key features:
- Approximately 2050 full-length articles, more than 8,500 full-colour images and over 3.5 million words (equivalent to a 4,000+ page book in text alone)
- Storage Card & Phone Memory Compatibility
- Keyword Search
- Adjustable font sizes and styles
- Cross Reference Links - tap on a link to easily go to the related article
- An easy-to-use alphabetical index for all articles
- Compatibility with ALL S60 devices, from the Nokia 7650 to the N95
- (I add this - it’s also UIQ compatible, as long as you have iSilo installed)

In order to be able to read the Wikipedia on your UIQ 3 smartphones, you need to install iSilo first. iSilo is actually a universal reader which can be used to read PDB files and also some other formats. With iSilo, it compresses texts and images into it’s own PDB format suitable for mobile.

You can download the Symbian Wikipedia from The Series 60 Weblog. The PDB file is around 90MB after decompression.

Enjoy reading!!!

When can we get SMS threading app? Come on UIQ3 developers

On the N95 that I use, there’s an application that I use very frequently. It’s called SMSChat, developed by SymbianWave. What it does is actually presenting incoming and outgoing text messages in threaded mode ala instant messaging where you can view them nicely.

This is a 3rd party solution, S60 3rd Edition doesnt have it built-into the OS. But SymbianWave took the initiative to bring it to the S60 users. Now my question is, where’s the UIQ 3 version? Will it be made available for us UIQ 3 users or we’re going to wait till eternity to get it on our UIQ 3 smartphones? For S60 3rd Edition users, this SMSChat from SymbianWave is not the only solution, they have at least 2 other applications with the same functions like SMSChat. One is called SMSThread and another one is Nokia’s own Conversation which has just been released by Nokia Labs.

Isn’t it great if this cool application is brought to UIQ 3?

Another Sony Ericsson P1i Blog

There’s another P1i dedicated blog which can be found at http://p1iblog.wordpress.com/ and it is handled by no other than Shaun McGill, a name associated with PDA247.com and a few other websites. He’s known for his deep, thought provoking and reasonable editorial on the use of digital devices in the past and he owns a SE P1i now it seems.

His latest post on the P1i Blog dated on September 11th 2007 and until today, it’s quiet. Whatever happened, I dont know… Support his blog, go visit it!

***Thanks to Ares for mentioning the link to me

AAS Pubmeet 2004…

Every year, AllAboutSymbian holds a meet in a pub in London and I was lucky in 2004. That was the time where I met the AAS Team in flesh and no words can explain the memories. I just published my thought about this event in i-Symbian.Com. Actually, I was thinking to myself that it could be great if I could fly to London this year for the events (AAS Pubmeet and Symbian Smartphone Show) but I dont think I am able to do that because the cost… But if there are any party willing to sponsor yours truly… I’ll accept it with open hands…

Standby time…

I didnt remember when was the last time I was able to capture the standby time of my P990. There was once where it managed to stay “alive” for more than 10 days before I decided to switch it off because the RAM was too low, opening Messaging alone will close all other running applications and no other apps can be run at the same time.

This time, with the aid of Swiss Manager and a screen capture utility, I managed to record the moment of truth where my P990 stayed for more than 5 days. It’s really cool to see it doesnt reboot by itself or the memory level going too low.

What about you? What is the longest time your UIQ 3 smartphones stayed alive?
