Asri al-Baker

The name’s Asri al-Baker. Mobile is my passion. Started using mobile devices with a Psion Revo back then in the late 90’s early 2000. Tried various devices including Palm v, Handspring Visor, HP Jornada 565 and lots of others. But decided to stick to EPOC until today. I start to use Symbian with the 7650. The first UIQ device was Sony Ericsson P800 and man… what a beautiful device that was… Lightyears ahead of it’s competitor… Currently, I’m using a P990 with an N95 together with a device I still carry everywhere, my beloved Ericsson MC 218… UIQ or User Interface For Quartz, You Eye Queue… Whatever you call it is the logical evolution for Psion EIKON because when Psion PLC stopped the PDA business, they have a couple of ideas including Pearl (FOMA & S60 today), Crystal (Series 80 Communicator) and Quarts (UIQ Today)…

The rest, is history…

*** As of 1st March 2008, Sony Ericsson P1i and Nokia E61i are my tools for work and leisure :-)

I am a what you could consider a huge phone geek, namely when they have the brand Sony Ericsson on it. Regarding UIQ, its something that came two years ago to my life… i always had admired devices like the P800, and P910, but never made the jump to smartphones when those were out. When the P990 was announced i decided it was time to move up from phones like the t610, k700, and k750, to something more powerfull and flexible. And that was it…i bought the P990 (later i got the P1), and became a UIQ fan. I tried other smartphone OS, but really,UIQ´s versatility and power is what i want on my smartphone.

My first meet with UIQ was back in the day of the Sony Ericsson P800 and later also the Motorola A925. I am mainly a Sony Ericsson guy, and am also the author of USEB, so my UIQ phones would primarily be Sony Ericsson ones. My first with UIQ 3 was of course the P990, of which I was lucky enough to get a pre-production unit. The W960 is my current UIQ phone and is great. I like the UIQ interface and the Symbian platform’s features. This is what makes a smart phone!

I live well in a small province on the western shores of Norway (or the city of Bergen). My name is Jostein Johnsen.. so now anyone can figure out where I live and what I do with a search on the intertubes. But briefly, I study computer science, and other things vaguely associated with it. Sometimes, I take my UIQ phone with me on hikes up in the mountains, so I can still rant on the internets when I’m away. I have some “professional” (technically speaking) experience with developing applications. Or, well, with stopping the project halfway, removing everything challenging and fun, compiling the damn thing - and pretending it’s all to specification, so everyone can get paid according to contract.

..I prefer to work at the university.
