Well, my P990i with UIQ3 is finally dead.
The only application I wanted to have upgraded is not supported by Opera.
What a shame.
Anybody suggestions for my next phone ? Google or Apple ?

Everybody rejoice!

Opera 9.51 is running FANTASTIC on my W960i. Best web browser by far on UIQ devices.
And considering this is a first beta of the browser I’m suprised it runs so well! It renders pages fantastically and quick as well.

And I love the enhanced panning around web pages with just the flick of a finger instead of dragging your finger over the screen over and over again.

Great work Opera! Was worth the wait.

I think flash is being worked on. But personally I don’t mind another wait for flash if it means opera 9.51 becomes a lot better through its development.

So how do people compare it to @web? I really wanted @web to do well, but having downloaded the latest version (the one that nags) I just can’t see why I’d buy it. It can take upwards of 3 minutes to fully load up slashdot for example. That’s just mental.

What are people’s thoughts comparing the two?

Finally! Solve the trick! You need to change the extension file to small letters - .ZIP to .zip

Regarding the invisible input text problem, i see the same e.g. on google and facebook. Already reported that in the bugs thread:

My point of view…

Opera Mobile will be a great internet browser!
I’ve try it, and i like it (don’t love it yet though)
The problem on the P1 is that you must use it with 3G speed to be able to enjoy it.
GPRS is way too slow.
Stability is generaly ok…
But improvements will be welcomed.
I have instaled the flash plug in and when you enable the plugins in opera mobile it seam that flash is working.
Widgets are cool.
All things said the next genaration of mobile browsing is here.
Good job Opera

@Ares:

Do you have any idea or knowledge if the final version is going to be a commercial product or not? Why did the Opera folks did this? I mean UIQ is on a dead line and they release a new version of Opera… I believe it might be one of this two reasons: either they want to realease a final commercial version or SE has decided to provide future support for P1i W960i G900 G700. What do you think about the latter version?

sorry for the bad english…

This is stunning - the AJAX support is really amazing too - you can actually use the google docs site (although it’s really slow if you try and edit!). Gmail full version works. I’m very impressed.

Knocks the socks off @WEB I’m afraid. It even lets me fully manage my LAN, in conjunction with UIQ PIPS VNC Viewer! Rock on!

Stu, indeed! Its amazing for a beta app

@Igor Stosevski

Believe it or not, Opera is dying. The Opera browser market share is worst ever (and it’s not something recent).

I believe they are trying to grab the Mobile market share, as the desktop market share is almost lost. They are offering mobile browsers to keep users “entertained”.

Either that, or they have made a contract with Sony Ericsson last year, and they are honoring the contract (although they know UIQ3 is dead)

I still don’t understand how Opera makes any money out of this, but it’s good they are not asking anything.

Keep up the good work Opera!!

October 23rd, 2008 @1:44 am

Although, wow, it doesn’t half eat your battery… (with LAN on too I guess it’s less surprising)

TiM
October 23rd, 2008 @7:17 pm

Yea, it’s a battery sucker alright! Still, that’s what you get for good, fast, accurate HTML rendering.

I wonder how much this’ll cost when (if) it’s released? It’ll be worth it!

LAU, major open-source browser producers make their millions off including google/yahoo/ask/etc search bars.

It makes sense to release a final version of Opera Mobile for UIQ now, because most of the install base will jump at it in desperation for something new before the platform gets thrown 6 feet under.

Plus don’t forget there are the UIQ G-series phones SE released which are to be developed for too. ;)

ares

AFAIK, final version will be payed

René Brunner

I think Opera is releasing an UIQ3 version of their browser for future prospective customers, customers like SE that will consider to bundle the browser with their products. Opera’s weight for such customers corresponds with the number of copies they have running - companies are much more likely to choose a proven product that is already successful than a newcomer without any track record.

For widgets, the number of copies running (regardless of platform) is also important. People and companies are more likely to write widgets if there are a lot of copies running. And who knows, over time there may be money in widgets for Opera.

So, I think, get more copies running is the name of the game, widen Opera as a mobile platform, win clout and weight. It does not matter much on top of which OS these copies run, on the contrary, maybe UIQ3 is a very attractive target because it waits so desperately for a good browser, and people will flock to Opera 9.5 in droves.
