SE what have you done?

Over at seloyalist blog, our friend karun made a folowup to his previous article regarding what went wrong with UIQ.

As usual, images speak as thousand worsds…at short term, SE is potentialy exchanging this kind of Symbian UI:

(more here)

for this kind of UI:

I have no doubts about what i like more (this has nothing to do with the Nokia 5800 by itself: its the greatest products i have seen from nokia in along time, the specs vs price relation is just AMAZING)

  1. Yeaah !! UIQ Touch !
Symbian Smartphone Show, London 21-22 October
You find UIQ Technology in the center of the show, between Symbian and Sony Ericsson , in stand number 54.

  2. The presentations/concepts on UIQ’s site are just amazing. Considering that it would not just be a “painting” like Touch3D, X1 and Omnia but rather a real turnover in every default program of the UI I wonder why Nokia would not just let the UIQ’s graphic designers make the graphics?

Maybe someday (when GDesk has all the necessary options) someone with a lot of stamina will make something like this for our beloved UIQ 3s :)

  3. Think about so-called “concept cars”: They look terrific, they really are able to excite “wows” and “aaahs” from the audience, but has ever a car manufacturer been able to really *deliver* something that resembled such a concept car and had a price that was affordable for mere mortals?

What UIQ’s website is showing is a “concept UIQ”, nothing more.

Remember that a SE P1i is running on an ARM CPU with slightly more than 200 MHz, whereas the smooth animations on the iPhone are powered by an incredible 620 MHz. You can see on the P990 what happens if you try animations with a 200 MHz CPU.

What do you think is needed for the kind of animations that UIQ uses in their “concept UIQ” on their website? 1 GHz? And what do think such a phone would cost?

My favors are also heavily on the UIQ side, but to feel sad about a bright UIQ future that never was because of a few
Flash animations on a website is just a terrible waste of feeling, IMHO.

  4. I doubt that SE will ever implement a new UI for UIQ
UIQ is dying, they’re already talking about a symbian foundation product for the next year
the tube is just awesome it has everything you need at a top price

  5. René…so??? Why are you talking about 200mhz processors, and even the iphone??? You know what kind of processors will be used soon right??? If SE did what we expected with UIQ, now we would have UIQ 3.3 devices with faster processors, and only one year or more from now, with even more powerfull hardware (it WILL be available then, and also symbian will support multi-core processing), they would be in conditions to use stuff like the UIQ Touch concepts

  6. It’s true that the concept on the site is not realistic.
The screen resolution would have to be huge, the text barely readable, and lots of animations that I’m afraid would impact on the battery and usability.
The Nokia on the other hand seems like an unfinished product. Like a beta.
No effects/transitions are seen, GUI over simplified and without taste.
I believe Nokia can do better. I’m hopping this is only a pre-production unit with a beta OS and without themes (if they exist at all).
Let’s give some credits to Nokia, as SE doesn’t deserve our appreciation for letting UIQ die.

  7. totally agree with you ares! SE should have upgraded the hardware on its uiq3 smartphones a long time back. what these concepts highlight is the vast potential that UIQ had. But due to lack of manpower and funding from SE, UIQ is dead. With such incomplete support from SE, there was no way UIQ could compete with the likes of S60. In the end, it was the better UI that lost!

  8. Have you used a P910i lately? (yes, a UIQ 2.1)
I did, and I say one thing: It’s damn FAAAST smartphone!!
UIQ3 interface by comparisson is 2x slower, apps load 4x slower, everything sucks!!
How did that happened with UIQ3?
Maybe it was because of bad hardware decisions (memory type used), bad UIQ3 programming, or even Symbian 9 design.
We need a worthy successor to the P1, and it’s not another Windows Mobile (aka Xperia) that is going to give us that.

  9. You know what kind of processors will be used soon right?

Well, ares, unfortunately I don’t. The battery problem will probably be still with us for the next few years, so you just can’t crank up the MHz as you would like. Anyway, Symbian smartphones used for many years and still use CPU’s around that 200 MHz point, and don’t assume that all phone designers just have been stupid or too timid doing so.

But I agree: The UIQ people are (were…) the ones with more ideas, the more innovative and creative ones, and Nokia really has a long way to go until S60 looks really nice and flashy.

What saddens me most is the lost opportunity: SE together with UIQ had something that’s nearly incredible for such a fast-moving area like phones - a several-year headstart on touchscreen phones. And look what they did with this truly golden opportunity. The touchscreen greenhorns and newcomers pull ahead of SE left and right, while that company essentialy decided to go to sleep until 2010.

  10. Hey Guys,
I often check your site (I have a P1i and before that had a w950i) and I have to say to prototype designs on the UIQ site look fantastic esp personal facebook and the Activity Manager (Xperia style), much cleaner than the current UI. As mentioned above why would they design these images, is it a last ditch effort to save UIQs design team, or were they applying for roles at Symbian? Just a thought

  11. René, agreed. Dachiro, i think they UIQ is just positioning themselves as service providers for developing under the symbian foundation. Maybe SE and Motorola will jump out, and they need to find other investors…

  12. This article shows the hole where SE has put themselves

    http://www.visionmobile.com/blog/2008/10/why-did-nokia-really-acquire-symbian/

I think the future on symbian is Nokia, nothing else…

  13. Wow, those UIQ concepts on the UIQ site are simply amazing.

I hope they will release something like that!

  14. @M-tuning

that won’t be possible now as SE has ditched UIQ :(

  15. Maybe Sony Ericsson will do the right thing and include the new UIQ4/TOUCH interface in future software updates.

After all, there’s rumors of a P1i update soon and coming so near with the unveiling of UIQ TOUCH it might be a possibility?

  16. UIQ touch is never going to be unveiled. UIQ is dead, as far as SE is concerned.

The new P1 firmware update looks too good to be true, considering the past.

  17. Karun, on UIQ.com they say they’re going to be showing off UIQ Touch to people who come to their booth. So in terms of it being released it will be, but we probably won’t get it on UIQ3 phones.. We might, but who knows.
