Escarpod 1.10 is out
There is a new version of UIQ3´s free podcast player out. According to teknolog over at my-symbian, the new version brings “bugfixes and new and very useful M3U support for audio books”.
Get it here.
On a very sad sidenote, this is what we can now find at the Bergamot Project´s homepage:
As of July 2008, it is clear that UIQ will not be a significant platform in the future, and has been all but abandoned by handset makers. Following this, I am considering moving the Bergamot Project over to the S60 platform, which will become the basis of the future Symbian Platform. This would include an S60 port of Escarpod.
Escarpod for UIQ will still be kept updated for the near future, but we will not start any new UIQ projects within the Bergamot project.
Teknolog
While i tend the arguments they give, it think its way too early to abandon UIQ3 userbase. I hope at least teknolog and Co do finish the messaging app they “promised” us sometime ago..
I do not understand, why all people think, that the new symbian foundation abondens UIQ and goes to S60. Maybe they just abonden both UIs and do something totally different (merging best of both worlds as I hope
). Or it could be quite the oposite, that they wil choose UIQ over S60 or am I mistaken?
Teknolog sucks! fisapa.
Hello
I also do not understand the meaning of the Symbian Foundation. What will happen with S60 and UIQ3 in the future ?
Can we expect something new, or does it only mean, that UIQ3 has to die ?
As far as I can read, Nokia is working in the 5800 with touchscreen, S60 Version 5. It is said, that it will be available late 2008/early 2009. If the future of Symbian Foundation is S60 only, it should not be called “Foundation”, but “Nokia Dictator-ship”.
I still hope for UIQ3.3 phones to come to the market !

Business is no democracy. Or does your boss organize votings with employees about company decisions?
In the business world, the owner of something is its dictator. Its absolute monarch. Not a trace of democracy if the owner does not feel like listen to opinions of employees.
This is true for literally millions of businesses the whole world over. It’s basic capitalism, you know.
And now Nokia is the sole owner of Symbian. Yes, its dictator. Did you expect anything else? Don’t like it? Well, tough.
Teknolog has done great things for uiq3 users, and FOR FREE, give him and the other guys the deserved respect!
But i wish they did not jump so fast to s60 bandwagon only, there is still life on uiq for at least one more year. And s60 like it is now is not an option for most of us
Teknolog sucks! fisapa.
Teknolog uses its own spare time to program things and gives them to you for free. Well, that’s not yet enough? You want that Teknolog uses his free time to program what you like, and still free of course, because, otherwise, Teknolog sucks?
Yeah, right. Definitely sucks. Like the whole rest of the world, by the way, because I rather rarely get what I want, and even if I do, it costs money when of course it should be free. Awful.
And what does “fisapa” mean? If that is not your name or similar, but a word instead, is that more polite or less polite than “sucks”?
ow then that line on the UIQ in the first page of bergamot site means goodbye UIQ!
As Asri say…, this is sad. I don’t like the S60, I understood that the users will have something different at S60. But many comments say that the only survivor is this S60 instead UIQ3. Very sad sittuacion.
The facts of the matter are that it’s a known fact that the Symbian Foundation’s open source “Symbian 10 OS” will be based on the current S60 code, which Nokia are donating to the foundation and fully open-sourcing.
That means, that while some elements of the UIQ UI may get rolled into future versions of what is currently known as “S60 touch”, UIQ IS going to die as a major and supported UI.
Yes, it’s unfortunate that developers are jumping ship from UIQ while there’s still effectively 2 years until we see Symbian 10, but equally unfortunately SonyEricsson and Motorola have both basically stopped UIQ development already, meaning it’s simply not a good business proposition to develop for UIQ any longer.
I’ve been playing around with an S60 3rd and I see a lot of potential in it for a future touch-screen version.
It’s sad UIQ is going to die, but I’m confident that Nokia can deliver an UIQ-like OS with the best os S60 (easy key navigation) and the best of UIQ (easy touch navigation) mixed together, in good OS that is retro-compatible with current Nokia applications.
In fact, if nokia released a touch-screen with full qwerty that could run the old current non touch screen applications, I would buy it right away!
The bad is that nowadays touch-screen smartphones are either UIQ or Windows — there’s nothing in between.
That’s sad…

That’s pretty much what S60 Touch is going to be! Look out for devies featuring it around the end of this year.
