“UIQ going forward”

This was posted today at UIQ Developer Community News:

Following the announcement of Symbian Foundation we would like to provide our community with some further information.

There are still a significant number of UIQ phones in the pipeline. We will continue supporting developers as before, and this site will remain operational for the foreseeable future as a valuable resource for Symbian OS / UIQ developers.

The one change we will make, is to close the option to purchase Premium Membership. You will still be able to purchase, and use, individual support tickets as before.

  1. It’s sad that none of the UIQ3 phones lanched since the P1 has a qwerty keyboard. I hope one of those phones in the pipeline include a P1 substitute.

  2. It just doesn’t make sense for me to support an OS that’s basically dead, moreso from a company whose track-record in dealing with customers has been atrocious of late. I see absolutely no reason to get excited about this announcement other than the fact that the UIQ community will probably be able to make better software/hacks than SE itself.

On the other hand, WM appears to be getting better and better, especially with the buzz that the HTC Touch Pro and Samsung Omnia are generating. I think it’s telling on SE’s part that the X1 has been replaced by the Touch Diamond as the WM phone that gets the most buzz.

Just a terrible state of affairs all around.

  3. Sorry, do not agree. 2 years is alot of time. If you sum all uiq3 phones, there is a considerable market out there, of people that normally are power users, unlike s60 majority, and people that actually buy apps. If together with this there will be some more new devices, make perfect sense to keep supporting uiq. Not only that, devs are doing it: digia @web, power mp3, new quick office, new docs to go, new versions of gdesk, etc. When the time comes, most of us will then evaluate if the symbian foundations does retain anything of what we like about uiq, and then choose to go for it or not. And then, well, remember what going from uiq2 to uiq3 meant…

  4. Just want to had that i am ever and ever more satisfied with my p1, although lately all has to do with great 3rd party software, great mods and great hacks. All that SE did was create a decent base device and software, but then they did nothing else.

  5. In my opinion if you need a Phone-PDA, UIQ3 is still the way to go.
The P1 (and M600) with their qwerty keyboard and finger friendly interfaces are almost stylus proof.
Micro$oft based devices are mostly PDA-Phones. Great for Office and games, but too complex and not exactly ideal for many people.
Symbian and UIQ3 created a simple to use, stable and easy to setup device, that deliver what most of us need.

  6. well good news, symbian has some time to go until it rolls out

Is UIQ team really have knowledge about upcoming SE phones?
    Maybe from SE developers.

  8. @jhoravi: Maybe from Motorola developers…

  9. just wondering they already fired most of their UIQ employes…

  10. Well, no one has been fired yet. They have been noticed. Its a precuation in sweden, and must be done some time ahead ‘if’ they want to sack people. Hopefully moto will reveal their plans soon, but that more uiq phones will hit the market, that’s for sure.

  11. Uiq, are you, like it seems, UIQ employee???

“Is UIQ team really have knowledge about upcoming SE phones?

Well, since the UIQ team is always involved in creating the SE and Moto phones, there i no doubt that they know all about upcoming phones from both manufacturers.

And I don’t think the info comes from the development teams (they probably are the last ones to know actualy), but from a very senior management level. It’s all about roadmap and planning. This things take time and need a lot of decision making.

I’m sure they know everything, have the specs, play with the prototypes, and they don’t tell us. DARN!

  13. Interesting the new UIQ web site all about UIQ 3.3
My bet is that a few more UIQ phones will be launched and they all will be UIQ 3.3
