Goodbye UIQ, hello Symbian Foundation
As i´ve told you yesterday, today there will be a big announcement. We just did not expect it to be THAT big.
Nokia commited to buy the remaining Symbian shares and at the same time joined together with SE, Motorola, Samsung, LG, etc, in the Symbian Foundation, that will unify Symbian, S60, UIQ and
MOAP(S) in a common UI.
More details on the SE press release here.

Hello
I do not understand the impact for UIQ.
Closer cooperation of all UI (MOAPS, S60 and UIQ) ?
I can imagine that MOAPS and UIQ will completly disappear.
Gerhard
Well, they say “Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola and NTT DOCOMO announced today their intent to unite Symbian OS™, S60, UIQ and MOAP(S) to create one open mobile software platform”, so…
Hello
the interpretation of this press releaase is not easy. Only insider with a good information “behind the curtain” may understand. As for me, the current setup of work is rather unclaer. E.g. what is the contribution of Symbian, UIA and SE for the OS for e.g. the P1i ? I was always wondering !
We have to wait and see, what will happen.
I understand, that UI will become more unified, but still manufacturers will have differend products at the market.
End of UIQ ? May be to “digital”.
Gerhard
My 2 cents:
2 years is a long time, and many things may change in the mobile world meanwhile.
In 2 years iPhone successor(s) may become the 2nd leading mobile platform. In 2 years Windows Mobile may become the only selling platform. In 2 years UIQ may have almost died. Etc …
What I say is, don’t hold your breath.
In 2 years I will access the success of this initiative. Meanwhile I want software upgrades for my P1!
LAU, right
Btw, check this

It probably means that S60 will get the touchscreen UI technology for free from UIQ (since Nokia is not able to make one themselves), so there is no more reason for UIQ to exists in a few months. That’s sad.
Its not in a few months, like LAU said…
And at least, the s60 “brand” won´t exist also…
what else could they do…
Hello Android, hello iPhone …
and don’t forget their sponsering initiatives to make software.
That’s the small thing SE with UIQ3 overlooked !
(free) Software & software developers are making smartphones succesful.
Why else would one buy a smartphone ?
Wow…will the new UIQ3 phones get even shorter support than the M600i did? I’m glad I recommended my friends & associates NOT to purchase SE!
SE phones support is given by SE itself, not UIQ, so nothing should change, at least for worse (not that it is good like it is now)
Hello All,
