Seems like someone finally figured a way!
Step 1.
download all the usefull software.
1. SE pc suite
2. apptrk.sis
3. python-2.5.1
4. win32-py2.5
5. pyserial-2.2.win32
6. 1.py (copy 1.py to c:\)
(get 3-6 here )
Step 2.
Install all the software.
AppTRK.sis on your phone .The others on PC by order in default
Step 3.
COM port
Run pc suite——USB with your phone——Phone model
My computer——attribute ——hardware——Device Manager——com and LPT
You will say “SE M600 appliction port (com6),se pc connect port (com7)
memory it.
Step 4.
Edit the file 1.py
Open it with notebook .
Find the trip ” ser = serial.Serial(4) # I have COM5″
You can use the “ctrl +F” order.
Then change 4 to 5,change 5 to 6.
Save it.
Step 5.
Run AppTRK.sis
PC suite——USB with your phone ——run AppTRK.sis——show connceted
If not ,change the port 2 to 1.
Step 6.
CMD and success
win+R——CMD——enter——run 1.py
After a few seconds,it will show”>close ,>End+Exit”, you have succed.
Step 7.
Try it
CLOSE ALL.
open x-plore or swissmanagerpro
open the private folder c:\ or d:\

Edit: tested and confirmed…i just had to change some things, because my COM ports are 7 and 8, so in step 4 i changed 4 to 6 and 5 to 7, and now it all works - the folders that i once could not open on swiss manager, now can be opened!!!

Some examples: walkman player from w960 can now be ported to p1, you will be able to change all the icons and folders, profile apps might be done, etc, etc

Well, I understand that people may be happy now to get a way around some limits that Symbian and UIQ3 imposed on them until now. But on the other hand this is also a development that is a little scary: It seems to me that finally Symbian phones got the attention of hackers whereas until now, for a long time, those hackers played elsewhere, e.g. hacking the iPhone.
So, today some “nice” hackers bring you a way to look into private folders. But what will not-so-nice hackers bring you tomorrow?
I think this “AppTRK” thing that people now happily install onto their phones is a general-purpose driver that can be instructed to do many other things beside making private folders accessible. I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t want something like that on my phone.
Until now all Symbian so-called “malware” has been a joke and only hyped to death by security software companies. But if Symbian now really is in the spotlight of hackers, I think we will soon see the first *real* Symbian malware.

Fair points René, there are risks…but this can only be done by people that are commited and knowing what they are getting into…this is not for the general public…
And if SE/UIQ wants to close this hole, then, why not…but GIVE US new features in the new firmware updates…give us profiles…give us opera mobile 9…give us the pannels interface of the G series, etc…that way there won´t be reasons to try this stuff…
Otherwise, i am excited about this…imagine customizing all the phone content…not just some few icons…

Yeah, ares, life in general is risky
In the meantime I checked the Symbian-Freak forum thread that is the original source of the hack, and saw that indeed AppTRK is quite a powerful piece of software. It does nothing on its own, but it can be instructed to do a lot of things.
Not a big risk alright, but better let people know. And in my opinion AppTRK is certainly something to de-install if no longer needed, and not to be left hanging around on the phone for nothing.

im thru the same issue that you ares. my ports are:
se p990 application port (com8)
se pc-connect port (com9)
so i changed the line to this:
ser = serial.Serial(7) # I have COM8
but no help!

Isn’t this AppTRK related to the tool from Mokia, that allows on-device debugging on Symbian Devices (which is why it’s so powerfull and can access otherwise resrticted areas)?
If I’m right it’s quite ironic that a security issue on UIQ is caused by Nokia, hehe.

People seem to go a little overboard, it seems. Just because file system protection on UIQ3 now has a big hole punched into it, of course you still can’t just write to FLASH memory. And drive Z: is just such FLASH memory, normally read-only.
No wonder, Neo Corvis, that you don’t succeed.

hey, i downloaded the “Walkman Pack By B.U.S.T.E.R” from the Gdesk site (http://gdesk.wetpaint.com/page/GDesk+designs) and i would like to install the walkman music player skin on my p1i, Can anyone tell me where do i have to place the files? c: or D: and how, because i tried and i had acces to C: with xplore by using this program but the skin didn’t work. Vasif, you have to acess line of comand on windows, that´s what it means. You first copy 1.py to the root of C: drive on your PC, then run 1.py from the command line…that´s it.
Reza, you need to apply the hack described above to have access to the protected folders

How ever I manage to download all of them except 1.spy. Like others I have been trying to download from the link that was provided without any succes though.

ok for the ones who doesnt know what (win+R——CMD——enter——run 1.py)means let me explain,it means that you have to execute 1.py for this you can press ctrl+r when the little window popup type cmd and then enter.A black windows will appear,now since you save the 1.py file or whatever it is,in C:,type in the black screen C:\1.py and press enter.

Unless you install capsswitch, you need to run the hack from the pc after every boot.
In swmail’s Walkman3 archive, you need to paste the “system”, “private”, “resource” folders into the root of the c- drive. Not just dump the “c”-folder
If you’ve done this right, the walkman3 app will turn up on the “tools” folder in the main menu, like any other newly installed app. It won’t overwrite or replace the existing media- player. But the media- player that’s open will respond to play/pause, and so on, because it uses the same interfaces as the built- in one.

Try uninstalling the pc- suite, then installing any drivers and the the new version of the pc- suite again, for example.
It’s not possible to kill the phone and the rom- areas by installing this hack. You can only fuck up file- system content, such as pre- installed programs, pictures, directory structures, etc. Which can prevent the phone from booting (but not from being reflashed on SEUS (at least if SEUS is working, which isn’t always).

If the PC suite installation doesn’t complete (if that was the problem), check that you have the xp rpc service (or UPNP) enabled (i.e., go to “services”, or type “services.msc” in a run- dialog (start->run).

No worries that the phone won’t be detected in the pc- suite if it’s not booted up, and so on. Ok.. Then after you’ve installed SEUS. Unplug the phone. Start SEUS - it should go through the animation, and check for updates. (If it doesn’t complete, you need to install the flash- component for internet explorer, for the program on the pc - you can get that off the adobe- pages. here: http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/alternates/ .. and start SEUS again).
When SEUS Then choose your phone in the menu, and follow the on- screen instructions. Grab a cup of coffee. Wait.

Yeah. Doesn’t matter if the mem- stick is inserted. And when you get to the choose phone model->accept terms, accept terms again, accept, accept - then you’re ready to start the flash. And do like it says - take out the battery, insert the battery. Then hold the c- key, while you insert the cable. It should take some time, windows should detect a flash- memory device - then it should run the detect on the phone. And continue with the flash, if it’s successful. Then it’ll download the rom. Make sure you don’t rip out the cable when the rom is being flashed.
If it fails for some reason after the detect, it’s a SEUS problem. So try again later.
If it fails during the connect sequence - with the hold down the c- key, and so on - because you have to click “continue installing the drivers anyway”, and so on… go back to the start of SEUS, and try again.

You’d need the “Internet explorer” version. But only if SEUS fails to start, and so on.

Well.. Then try installing flash for IE first.
If that doesn’t work, open the services- menu, like I said (run->”services.msc”. And make sure the “COM+” components, the one saying “DCOM server process”, and the two “Remote procedure call” lines are running.
If that doesn’t work, go to sleep :p

Well.. the hack is harmless. It doesn’t do anything on it’s own, it just removes the limitations so programs can read and write to the file- system without a strong certificate to grant permission. So probably you overwrote something on the c- drive, or a program did it for you somehow.
So.. don’t leave the caps open except when you need it, and be careful when writing to the protected folders.
And yes, use the backup.

A BIG NO. You cant install walkman 3 hack on P990. It’s only for the P1i. Read the comments in this topic from the beginning and you will understand.

Brilliant hack guys! My ports were a bit different and it actually worked without modifying the 1.py. M600i is a great phone, but I always want to tinker under the hood of any machine I own. Thanks also to dark_skeleton for Walkman!

@Nikola: that sucks. The theme files include code that’s executed, and it’s possible to hang the phone by changing the format of the intro- sound, or if the intro file is missing, or some “patch” for the theme doesn’t exist, etc. It’s programmed like any other mobile phone in that respect - not very robust. ..Not much help, but be sure to backup your contacts and so on regularly (on the mem- card, via the in- built menu, for example).

Step 4 - Opened it with Notepad
Then changed 4 to 5, changed 5 to 6. Do I have to play with numbers here?
Though according to Step 5, when i run AppTRK it does show “connected”
Step 5 - Done, shows connected.
Step 6 - This is where Am Stuck. From where should i run the 1.py. From the already connected phone
or from the Hard disk, or should i run in DOS command? Secondly, which 1.py should i run the edited or non-edited?
Step 7 - Close all on PC or on P1i(my phone). Should i reboot or not?

The python script is a simulation of the interface codewarrior would use to communicate with apptrk. Run it from the computer. If it completes, the hack is done. If you reboot, the phone is back to normal (the hack just changes some running memory).

Well, if you check in the device manager while you’re connected with the phone (in phone mode), you should see the ports you have on the system. Then put that number minus one, in the script in the line you’re supposed to. If you’re connected properly, have apptrk on the phone running, and so on, it’ll work.

Tried is on my 2 weeks old SE G900.. the python script ended with:

AppTRK does not show *anything* in the display, the “More” menu suggests that it’s connected though, since it gives me the option to disconnect.
so where do i find the c and z drives then? the file manager on the phone isn’t showing anything new, neighter is the pc suite file manager?

If it ’s the same thing , make a “master reset ” on C drive format .
Why don’t you used CAPSWITCH after to open the C:/ memory ?

i did that around 4 times before and just recently update my phone’s firmware at SEUS. now im trying to do this walkman buster on my phone using the same steps i got from here, but everytime i try to run the python just like what ive said on the my msg above, its not connecting

Try with an others PC : windows XP pack2
- Before ,master reset on C (phone memory )
- Install PC Suite VERSION 1.4.4 (not others )
- Close all others programmes on your PC .
- Don’t make back up ; just synchronise .
- Run also m-Router .

Seems to me that the “opening” of UIQ3 really was sort of a Pandora’s box: Out came not only joy and new possibilities, but also numerous people asking, begging, crying, shouting for help because something went wrong with the vivisection of their phone, and now they are in deep trouble…
And let’s be very clear about who is to blame for everything that goes wrong. Well, SE and UIQ of course…

its because they dont read the read me file that there’s a risk. just follow all the instructions and be guided accordingly, you will not end up dead phone. with regards to dead set after installing this, just reflash your phone and re-update it. it will work. this software will not affect in whatsoever to make your phone damage, nevertheles, installation without being guided by the instruction, its a risk you will take

i have hacked my phone before and installed capswitch with success, but i had a new phone sent to me and trying again, hacked and opened private folders, but having trouble with capswitch, changed the trkdriver.ldd and open capswitch and it keeps saying please copy the patched file over any help ??

I just bought a new P1i and tried to install walkman3 and I read all the instructions and tried on my cell. Everything was going well and I ran 1.py in my computer and some error message like “kDSReplyOsError” and some more sililar “kds” related error although at the last “close and exit” instruction was seen in command.After that I ran xplore and I could see C: drive but its protected folders were not seen like sys etc.How can I get access to those protected folders inside C:?Pls send me a quick reply.

i ran thru everything and it worked except i can’t open c:private, c:sys, z:private or z:sys. it’s like they’re empty. i have a w960i and am using x-plore.
