What do you want in the next Sony Ericsson UIQ 3 firmware upgrade?
Sony Ericsson UIQ 3 smartphone users are having some tough moments for quite some time because when a firmware upgrade is available, there is no official information about the changelog or the improvements in the new firmwares. Hence, we are always left in the dark and took our own initiatives to find the info.
What do you guys want in the next firmware upgrade for your UIQ 3 smartphones? This question is directed to the users of P1, W960 aka the 2nd Gen of Sony Ericsson’s UIQ 3 smartphones.
As for me, here are the things I would like to have :
1. Opera Mobile 9.5 (with Widgets, AJAX and Flash capability)
2. Better office application (Maybe QuickOffice v4 is coming?)
3. Battery power improvement
4. Publish the changelog publicly
5. OGG support in the internal Music Player
6. Full screen in Exchange ActiveSync.
7. Built-in screen capture utility
8. More powerful built-in filemanager. The current one is very unusable.
9. New photo/picture viewer. Â Must be fast and can generate thumbnails in split seconds
10. Real H.264 support in the built-in video player
What about you guys? Share with us ok ![]()
- To me the most annoying thing is why we can’t set the time of auto key lock, and phone lock.
The current timeout is so small I keep unlocking the phone each time I make a pause to think while typing.
- GPS location routines like Nokia ones would be very welcome.
Nowadays it’s an huge headache to develop native UIQ3 applications that make use of GPS, and that accounts for the lack of free native GPS tools for UIQ3.
Profiles! I just cant use the p1i at work without profiles. For a professional phone, no profiles is a disaster.
And that programmeable button on the side should operate the LED so I can find the network cable down the back of the PC - then I would not need to carry a k750i round with me!
What about profile? its a must have feature missing from P1i.
Asri, we should forward the results of this to SE smarthone divison.
What i want:
Real H264 support;
SVG support;
FL3;
RSS app with images and podcast support;
Alow 3rd parties to use the standby app feature;
Opera Mobile 9.5 when available
Add the new PDF+ version to ROM
G series note app, media player, etc
It’s got to be profiles.
1. Return of the phone- call screen that didn’t ask you if you wanted to use the status- bar. Instead, it should be obvious that the screen- lock should be enabled if you pick up the call with the handsfree, or if you have the “automatic lock” enabled. That should be enough to avoid accidental clicking (I do not need idle hands protection for crying out loud).
There should be an option to set so the phone won’t unlock when you get an incoming call. I.e., it should be possible to have the phone ring, and that you won’t accidentally pick it up when you pick up the phone with your hand. Maybe you could use a sequence on the keyboard to unlock it and pick up the call(?), but just allowing me to manually unlock it and pick up the call would be just fine.
2. Ogg- support internally.
3. A video and sound- editor (start- finish/cut, export to file).
4. A contact- application without the lag when you have the list- selection (only mobile numbers, etc). This is not impossible to do.
5. Contacts should have some form of autocomplete in the messenger- application. A popup of the three best matches, for example, when writing over four characters and pause (or remove focus)? There’s already a checkup if you write in numbers - why not improve on that?
6. The e-mail application: a) signature file should go at the end. b) quotes should be with ‘>’ notation, or any form or relatively standard notation like that (which should be viewed in the view- port as one ‘>’ on each line, not one from each carrier- return). c) fix the damned annying localisations for the “re:” fields, or at least make them selectable. Pretty, pretty please? With sugar on top?
7. A new standby- screen for incoming messages. Nothing fancy, just a view that covers the screen and contains an extract from the incoming message that was just downloaded to the phone in the background. This should obviously not paint itself on top of any active application, and should sleep quietly until you unlock the phone, for example. This could be a combined bluetooth, sms, e-mail - screen, where you could get away with pushing once (and wait a while) when opening a new message. Instead of like now, when you need to push the screen several times in order to see the messages (or even to see who it’s from).
8. Fix the Openoffice- bug that has been there from day one, and which forces a reboot of the phone (landscape- mode, click task- manager -> hang).
9. Opera 9.5. If not a flash- viewer, at least a placeholder for flash- content (a grey frame, for example, instead of a white screen that’s removed when Opera wraps content).
10. Larger notes: i.e., possibility to zoom in the notes and draw with greater resolution - and then the notes could be resized to fit with the standard format again, for example.
11. Profiles. Or if that’s not possible, an official documentation of the apis for: globally setting the volume, the ringtones, the alarm- behaviour.
12. Alarms with rising volume. Alarms on calendar, and alarms on the “clock” application should have independent volume- settings. Notifications should play the notification sound /once/. Not until the battery is gone. Once.
13. The push- mail scheduler should take several time- intervals. For example: 8-10, 14-18. As of now, that’s actually not possible.
14. My Hpm-90 set insists on opening the media- player when holding the play- button, even when the program is open. And won’t put the player in minimised mode again. Some way to access the clock without turning the thing on and off. Settings for controlling accessories - function for buttons (skip interval, skip between playlists when holding button down, etc.) and for display if available (time to dim light, which mp3 tags to display, light intensity).
15. Sending vcal objects via e-mail is very neat. But it would be even better if I could select several elements from the calendar, and export them to a vcs file. Or copy an element and paste it into the mail. (It could read that it was a vcs- file and ask if I wanted to add it to the attachments).
16. It’s still not necessary to update the inbox every single time the view is opened. It’s more than enough to update it every time a new message arrives - which is possible to program. Nor should it be necessary to go via that initial flickering list- screen when choosing “open message”, or when composing a new message. If you don’t believe that, then try GDesk - the code is open and does at least the last part. Just put that code into where none of us can.
17. The remaining selection- bugs. Several screens still refresh and lose the selections when there’s no reason they should. It’s still not possible to select photos by dragging the pen around the miniature pictures in the camera- folder, which forces you to select them one by one.
18. Folders in the messenger- application is still kind of useless - since you need to download messages completely, and then select them one by one when moving to online folders. It should be possible to select several on the overview- screen, and then hit move to -> *folder*. Also SMS folders, same thing, just with the local folders.
19. The pointer should not select an object when you push the pointer down, and move it some distance from where you pushed. I.e., if you select a couple of files and list- boxes, it should not be necessary to check if you have an object under when you release the pointer again. Inversely for the selections - when moving the pointer around, it should be possible to choose one object and not open it, by moving the pointer a small distance before releasing it.
20. Documentation of themes, in detail, about which colours are used and in what ways. Someone who made the system should be able to also say something clever about what typically costs resources on a theme, and which might or might not cause extra lag. Also, the transparency- effects on themes - they appear to be broken. Example - the object behind the background of any program is completely white. The object behind the buttons on the standby- screen is white. And the main- menu background opened over the standby- screen, if drawn as transparent, will become white. The scroll- bars in all other programs also are drawn with white background, when they should be transparent. (While other objects, such as list- boxes draw as they should.)
21. The opera- browser input field. It can take a reasonably unlimited amount of characters, but can only paste in about 300. Annoying. Very. Opera mini still has a character- limitation because of the java- implementation of textbox. Also irritating.
21. The welcome- message should be customiseable in different colours and shapes, and should be able to take enough characters to write: “Sony Ericsson thanks you for not putting this phone in the toilet and sending it on it’s merry way”.
22. Changelog.
23. Possibility to map keys to the media- player and the radio player. I.e, a media- package api of some kind that the different media- players could (and the inbuilt one should) include and use.
24. Undo/redo for text- fields, or option to turn undo/redo on and off across the UI.
25. Shortcut to vouchers for free software on the main screen, after a sucessful update.
Nice nipsen
I forgot one: ability to fast forward on the media player using the Left and Right keys, and not just with the touch screen
- Every time the Main Menu application is opened, it forgets the current selection (and folder) and resets itself like it it was just started.
This is very very annoying.
- Sent mailbox (SMS/MMS/eMail) have no folders. Why is that?
The InBox has folders!
- EasySearch-like search engine for the complete UIQ.
- Why UIQ tries to make video calls all the time, even it not connected to 3G? There should also be a way to disable video-calls all together in the Preferences.
- Configurable timeouts of key lock and phone lock.
- Profiles!
- Clock screen saver with information on missing calls/sms/mms
Another one: use the arrow- keys on the keyboard to switch day/month/week in the calendar (aqualung’s suggestion on the wiki). Strange thing. I think it’s going to work every time..
why is the p990i not upgraded anymore ? as a first day user of the p990i I hope se will have the brains to continue the support for the people that believed in the p series. anyway, i count on a better browser opera 9.5 e.g.
My wish-list:
1. Stable WLAN connections, sometimes the phone just hangs on the WLAN stack
2. Opera Mobile 9.5 (with Widgets, AJAX and Flash capability)
3. Faster switch between applications
4. Real H.264 support in the built-in video player
5. Flashplayer
Otherwise a good phone, the best I ever had.
I forgot another one - that properties for files in the file- browser should say something useful, instead of always saying the extension of the file is: “file”.
The internal browser should be easily persuaded to use Wifi if its available, and not try to use OTA connections unnecessarily.
Must have’s:
1. In case of contacts with multiple phone entries: when I’m being called, it only displays the nameof the caller, without the number. I need to see from which one of the 3 available numbers am I being called, just like 5 yo simpler phones did!!
2. The RDS radio should behave like th eone on k800 for instance. When I move to othjer city, it doesn’t automatically search for an alternative frequency anymore!! Or, if I store a frequency with the RDS name, and I move to another city, where’s another station on the same stored freq, it doesn’t display the new name, but the obsolete stored one. This is a drawback from the previous model …
Cheers

Anyone know bout the latest FW for w950i?
Thx 4 d info…
Back button in the lower left corner of the screen.. The actual location (the 2 of them) of the back button makes it impossible to use the phone with just one hand.. I know that most of the time there are already 3 buttons in the lower part of the screen, sometimes just 2.. but even if there were 4 I think they’d be still reachable (remember those 5 icons in a row on the stand-by screen).. or they could just put the “more” button on the upper/right corner..
What Do you think of this guys???
Sorry if someone already mention this..
I am not a regular in this blog…but thanks to ares,i find my way here at times.
What i want is SE to “CONTINUE TO RELEASE FIRMWARE UPDATES FOR MY P990″…just fix the bugs…nothing more.Don’t you think its unfair that only P1 and later models enjoy firmware updates??And not us..
Even the UIQ Evangelists would agree that P990 was the worst uiq phone ever…I don’t know if the phone is bad due to SE hardware or UOQ software or both.Since you guys ’seem’ well connected with UIQ and SE,why not bug them to release a firmware for my P990??Yeah,i am asking too much.
Anyway,this was my first experience with uiq and 3rd with SE…and definitely my last at both…unless you guys can do some magic.
