Tutorial - Use different fonts on your UIQ 3 smartphones

(Screenshots above showing the Motorola Z8 font on the right and the original P1i font on the left) This is something I did a long time ago but never have the opportunity to publish it. And I think it has been covered somewhere in the internet. I mean, changing fonts on UIQ 2 smartphones was very easy with the aid of a must-have app called SMan but on UIQ 3, it’s not the same case. Before you decide to follow this tutorial, I strongly advise you guys to be cautious because while it works for me and many others, there’s no guarantee it will also work on your devices. Here’s what you need :

1. A Sony Ericsson UIQ 3 smartphone (I use the P1i for example)

2. TTF fonts (e.g. Get Motorola Z8 font here and Nokia N95 font here)

3. Memory card reader  (P1i uses Memory Stick Micro aka M2)

4. A PC / Laptop

5. Patience

First you got to pull out the M2 card from your P1i. Better if you switch it off. Then, assuming you have downloaded the TTF fonts, there are 4 files :

1.   Sans-Serif_Latin-Bold.ttf

2.   Sans-Serif_Latin-BoldItalic.ttf

3.   Sans-Serif_Latin-Italic.ttf

4.   Sans-Serif_Latin-Regular.ttf

Plug your M2 into the card reader and plug the card reader into your computer. Find a folder named Resource in the root. Open that folder. Create a folder inside Resource, and name it Fonts. The full path of this folder should be :

X:\resource\fonts

Copy all the 4 TTF files  into this folder. Pull out M2 from the card reader and insert it into the P1i. Turn on the phone and Voila! New font is installed.

If you want to get rid of the font, just delete the TTF files in the  X:\resource\fonts folder

Cheers!!!

Here are some more screenshots of Sony Ericsson P1i with Motorola Z8 font on it.

  1. Some characters may not be displayed while invoking the virtual keyboard such as backspace or Enter for instance, showing a big black dot. Once you know where they are located it’s no more a problem.

  2. On the P1i, it also works without a memory card reader because you can use the phone itself as that reader: When you connect it to your PC with the craddle, just select “Mass storage mode” (or similar) instead of “Phone mode”.

In that mode, it’s possible without problems to create the needed “\Resource\Fonts” folder on the memory stick and copy the font files into that folder.

I think that trick does not work for the P990i - at least it does not offer the “Mass storage mode” in the way the P1i does when connected to the PC.

  3. Hi
Please tell me how to do this on a W950i as it doesn’t have a memorycard slot

  4. As far as I know, without a memory card the trick does not work. I tried myself to create a folder C:\resource\fonts, but failed, I would say probably because the available file managers don’t have the necessary capabilities and/or access rights to create such a folder on the internal C: drive.
