My YouTube rant…

The rise and rise of YouTube has redefined the way many of us usee to watch our favourite videos. Instead of watching them infront of our TV sets at predefined time, we can now watch our favourite shows or music videos at our own convenient time and location provided we have the necessary tools to view YouTube contents, internet browser and most importantly, high speed internet connection.

Traditionally, YouTube contents are watchable only on pc/laptops. However, with new technologies introduced every seconds, it is now possible to watch YouTube on mobile devices in various ways such as from it’s very own stripped down mobile site http://m.youtube.com and also from http://tinytube.net.

MobiTubia

For Symbian smartphones, especially S60 3rd Edition, developments and initiatives have been moved towards bring YouTube into the screen with less hassle. Applications like Mobitubia, emTube and YouTube’s Official Mobile Client (in Java) are among the ways users can enjoy YouTubes library anytime, anywhere.

YouTube Mobile Client

N95 users are even luckier because with the latest firmware, the S60 Browser received a huge facelift which can play YouTube natively without any plugin, thanks to the availability of Flash Light 3 for S60 3rd Edition. I’ve seen it in action and it’s jawdropping, to say the least… with automatic resizing of the video to fit on the screen. But ONE question remains unanswered.

“WHERE’s MY YOUTUBE APP FOR UIQ 3?”

Looking at the current situation for UIQ 3 application development, seems that nobody really cares about doing a YouTube client for UIQ 3, let alone making Opera browser able to play FLV files. With no real proof of whether Opera 9.5 Mobile can do it or not, we have no other option than to wait.  And also, maybe there’s a hope after all if the new CorePlayer version 1.2 really brings what it promised to add, a new streaming function for YouTube. Let’s wait…

Those S60 3rd Edition YouTube app I mentioned are only some  examples of what can be done and what HAVE been done to push the development and made the platform more attractive. What have been done in this regard for UIQ 3? Is there any development or initiative by Sony Ericsson, UIQ, Motorola and all UIQ developers to bring YouTube to UIQ 3 smartphones? Please… Show us!
