AAS reviews the W960
Steve Slitchfield from All About Symbian got his review of the latest SE UIQ3 smartphone published today, and it just confirmed our impression that the W960 turned out to be far better than what some early previews pointed to (yes Eldar, i am talking about your finger print covered pre-production unit “review”). It seems the recent launch at the UK is also going very well.
I notice something i did not realized before: the W960 can play h264 MP4 files, namely the Smartphones Show clips. Michell Bak confirmed this to me, although it does lag with higher bitrates. Here´s hoping for this to be added also to the P1 in the next firmware update.
Update by Michell - I thought I might as well show you guys how well W960 performs with the H.264 codec, so I’ve uploaded a video to YouTube showing how it plays the 50th episode of the Smartphones Show. Check it out here. Video removed!
Update by Ares - I was really finding weird the existence of such a big difference in terms of video playing ability between the P1 and the W960, giving they share the same latest organizer version. And so, i went and try the same h264 clip - and the fact is the P1, with the latest firmware also plays h264! So, what happened before is that i tried h264 clips with an old firmware on my P1, and never tested those again (because meanwhile i got core player, that handled that format). So, P1 users, rejoice. My appologies for the mistake guys!
Please refer to the comments for why this text has been crossed out.
Told ya it’s better than P1
Showoff :p
Hahahahaha….
I’m waiting for my Px
No need to wait for long any more, Asri
Don’t get too enthusiastic about W960i playing videos in H264 format, if you are basing that on the latest Smartphone Show. Despite what it says on the tin, that episode is encoded in H263 format.
Oh, looks like you’re right. Just tried with a video really encoded in H.264, and although the phone does show the video - VERY laggy, though - and does play the audio without any problems, it won’t be for any use
Michell why have you crossed out that part re h264? And taken the video of youtube?
Because it appears that the video is not a H.264 encoded one.
So, we should de post, again???? If its not really h264?
I mean, edit the post…
Done, Ares
i’m actually posting from the w960i atm and can confirm this does not handle .264 well
in fact any mp4 video above 128k datarate will stutter which is very dissapointing since i wanted at least on par with iphone performance
Have you tried that h264 playback with newer firmware ( I think there’s version update since jan/feb ) ? I could provide few test clips which I would be interested to know how well w960 plays them.
