Audio and video podcaster for UIQ 3

My friend Sebastian Brännström (aka teknolog) and Lars Persson (aka AnotherGuest) have been developing a really cool freeware application for UIQ 3. It’s an audio and video podcast application called Escarpod. The graphics in the application has been created by Alan Eddie, who has done a fabulous job! I was first helping a little with the icons, but Alan’s are far better :-)

Escarpod was recently submitted to the UIQ Open contest and was then published on the project website on the first of January. Escarpod is currently in a beta 2 stage and the release version will come later in January with more translations (I’ve added the Danish translation!). Escarpod will run on any UIQ 3 phone, but it’s highly recommended to use it on one with WLAN to cut the data expenses.

You can read more and download the free application here.

The open source Bergamot project - as this UIQ 3 project has been called - also includes other applications and very exciting future projects and ports from S60 to UIQ 3. You can find more info about the project on its Google Code website.

Oh and I’d like to welcome myself to the blog! :-D I’m Michell Bak and am also the author of The Unofficial Sony Ericsson Blog, and will now be joining Asri with posting about UIQ.

  1. Yeah! That’s the spirit! Ladies and Gentlemen, lets welcome Michell Bak to UIQBlog. Give him a loud applause will ya!

    :)

  2. welcome :)

  3. really great application, thanks a lot!

  4. Thanks ;-)

  5. Welcome Michell

Here’s hoping that UIQ will produce something substantial for you two to report on this year….something to match the enthusiasm Asri has brought to this blog so far ! ;-)

  6. By that I mean UIQ themselves…..the few developers who bother coding for UIQ 3 (and often do so for free!) have done a great job so far, and produced some absolutely indispensable apps !

  7. With UIQ constantly expanding and the new releases getting announced more and more frequently (UIQ 4.0 will be announced within months!), I see no reason why UIQ shouldn’t have room for a few developers to develop some freeware for the platform. Sony Ericsson’s Developer World does have a few staff members doing this and hopefully Motorola has / will have something like this, too.

  8. @all,

Many things for the support shown to this blog. Keep the support coming ok.

UIQ is evolving and improving from time to time. There’s no doubt about that. The developers, I mean the hardcore UIQ developers are the ones who made things possible. If we were to rely 100% to UIQ, SE & Moto, we wont get what we want because history proven that the manufacturers tend to customise their devices according to what _THEY_ want and what they _THINK_ the users want. But actually, do they care about what _WE_ really want? I dont think so…

For example, Sony Ericsson UIQ 3 smartphones come with a built-in RSS reader but it’s too basic. It doesnt even support html & images which IMHO are very basic. And not even enclosure. Luckily Escarpod is developed. If not?…

UIQ’s evolution is something of a trade secret and not many people outside the company know about them. The trend nowadays is towards creating intuitive and attractive UI like what Apple did with the iPhone (I cant believe I typed this!). And the UI can be either touch-based or keypad-based. I really believe UIQ has a llt of advantage in the touch-based smartphones because it’s been in this business for years…

    My 2 cents…

  9. Hi. How do I play video podcasts?
They seem to download fine (I can play them outside Escarpod), but within Escapod I just get the audio stream?

  10. Well, it’s not really a video podcaster application in that matter. It does support downloading of video files, but they can’t be played within the application. I do, however, believe that this feature will be added some time in the future.
