Bring the database app to UIQ 3 now please…

I dont know guys… the more I think about this, the more headache I got… I mean, there’s a lot of potential in UIQ 3 actually but there are not many applications released compared to S60 3rd Ed or even WinMob. I want to talk about a missing application which might not be useful for general masses but for some fans, they cant live without it. Database, ladies and gentlemen… There’s still no database app for UIQ 3. Yeah… there’s Epocware Handy Safe but it’s not as extensive as DDH Software’s HanDBase.  Handy Safe is  more like a secure password and sensitive information manager, not a full  database app where you can  create  links to other data  and  do some sort of filtering and sorting.I cant answer why there’s still no database app developed yet for UIQ 3. For old UIQ 2 users, there were Handy Databank from Epocware, YData from Yellow Computing and the holy grail of mobile database app, DDH Software’s HanDBase.

For me, I use database for a lot of stuff that I feel I want to have a quick reference and for my own record keeping. One of the database thingy that I still keep maintaining ismy Movie database collection. I collect information about movies that I watch and to keep track of movie titles. I am working in the media industry and it’s important for me to be always updated about movies and watch the latest movies whenever time permits. In year 2007 aloe, I watched more than 165 movies already. Various titles.

Another important thing I need to do using database is to keep track of my books and MP3 songs collection. Thousands of them ;-)

So UIQ developers, when can we see real database app for UIQ 3?

  1. You have a private message on forum.i-symbian.com about this subject from me. I may be one developer that can help :)

  2. Cool!!!

  3. Given the arm-wrestle that is Symbian signing, its a wonder there are any apps at all! As a small time developer it is a headache too far. As a user, its a a guarantee that nothing can be installed and any attempt produces incomprehensible error messages.

Look at Qflashlight, an app that should have been a part of the P1i from day one. Can you get it to work? No. Not even programmers with 20 years experience can manage that! If you want to install software, you dont want UIQ3, and if you dont, then you probably dont want UIQ3. SymbianSigned will be the death of UIQ3

  4. Fully agree with you, mate! Could be very cool if René could develope one :)

  5. The irony is that the “original” Organiser (the PSION Organiser II) came with about the simplest, yet most useful database app installed, especially when the LZ series came out. Even though records were limited to 255 characters in length and 16 fields/lines in OPL (unless you cheated and read/wrote the record buffer directly :-), the ability to cook up on-the-fly simple databases was IMHO what made the Org II useful for business, with the agenda running a close 2nd. Sure, one had to hack a bit of code to make data entry easier (I believe my FINDER can still be found on the Net) but the original OPL wasn’t hard to learn .

Now everyone is hacking spreadsheets and ‘notepads’ to do this, which is stupid and inflexible.

If that functionality could make it back into Symbian and UIQ3 Nokia and Sony Ericsson would IMHO have a job keeping up with sales..

  6. Peter,

totally agree with you. It’s ironic that there’s no built-in database app for all modern symbian smartphones. On 9210 (the original), R380 and up till now, database app is not even included in the SDK. In my opinion, database is one of the unique EPOC feature that is not available on other mobile platforms.

for series 80, my favourite 3rd party database app is SmallBase. There are also other solutions like PowerData, YData etc.

On UIQ 2, my favourite database app is Handy DataBank. There’s also solutions like YData and HanDBase.

on S60 3rd Edition, i choose HanDBase. Very powerful database app. Other solutions including QuodDB and Mobile Database Viewer.

    on UIQ 3, nada!

so, in this front, symbian is moving backward compared to ER5. Right?

  7. please tell me how i can create or edit rsc files that are in my uiq3 device?
