Questions to UIQ - you asked for it!
In finding new ways to make this blog as interesting as possible, we always think about new stuff which we hope will become our unique tradition. You wont find that information anywhere else. Here it is…
I will submit 10 questions to “someone” inside UIQ Technology. Who? You will find it later when the time comes to reveal the information
What I need from you right now is to submit questions to me as many as possible and the selected questions will be sent to the “UIQ Person” and he will answer them “DERECTLY” in this blog. How’s that?
Please reply to this post with your questions or email me : asri AT uiqblog DOT com . You can ask about anything related to UIQ. I dont promise anything but this sounds fun and I think you guys will feel the rush too
Now start thinking of the questions will ya!
Why is documentation for 3rd party developers so limited?
Can we expect major changes in the firmware for the P1i lifecycle?
Can we expect demand paging?
Hope its this kind of questions you are looking for
Is it physically possible to backport certain UIQ units with later UIQ versions, if the hardware is sufficient?
Is this a concern UIQ tech. has, when designing new UIQ versions? If not, why is this, and what hardware profiles does UIQ have in mind?
If it is possible to backport UIQ versions, is the decision up to the phone- manufacturer alone?
Why does UIQ prevent Opera 9 from being released to earlier UIQ versions as a separate product?
* when will we have flash support, and in what devices…only new???
* animated walpapers…when?
* printing drivers…they are supposed to be added soon…when?
* opera mobile 9…will older devices be able to access it, at least via download (probably not free, like opera 8.65 for s60)
* should not UIQ launch some apps itself has tech demos, and also to feel users needs that aren´t been fullfilled by developers?
* why they are doing such a bad job in terms of public relations, compared with competition
* do you think the strategy of hidding that the phone is powered by UIQ, has opposed to what S60 is doing in terms of visibility, is correct??? its clear its wrong…people need to know what OS powers a smartphone…calling it only a walkman phone (w960) or “multimedia monster” (z8) without giving focus to its OS is just plain dumb
Still about public relations, i would ask them to compare the amount of articles on UIQ stuff on a site like All About Symbian, with the quantity of articles on S60. The AAS editors are the first to point UIQ is not doing enough on this, and the same goes for its shareholders. Users feel the same.
Back to my point on UIQ launching apps themselves (or SE or Motorola)…i know UIQ does not want to compete with developers, but sometimes they should fullfill market needs when no one is doing things that users want, and that appear on other platforms. And also, there is the tech demo aspect - s60 labs is a good example, and UIQ should do the same (Asri talked about the need of “UIQ labs” sometime ago).
Comunication with public through blogs is another point…Nokia/s60 is doing it like all other major companies (Apple, Microsoft)…again UIQ, SE, Motorola are behind on this, and far from their users.
Final questions, regarding aplication releases:
Google maps with my location, out on s60 v3 from day one, native app. UIQ, no my location, only available in java app. Why is this??? Always behind competition…
Shozu, like Fring, its UIQ3 version are normally behind s60 v3, and handicaped. Example - gps tagging - shozu devs say UIQ3 makes this almost impossible…how can this be???? They can´t figure how use gps data on a app due to platform restrictions??? And this is just an example
Excellent replies from all of you guys… But We can have more aint it? More questions….
..to expand on the public relations bit: what sort of strategies does UIQ tech focus on? How will these strategies change, now that UIQ is not owned by one company?
How does customer support work when it comes to UIQ devices? Should questions be directed to UIQ, to the developer of the specific program, or the phone- manufacturer? How does UIQ receive feedback or suggestions on it’s design- choices, for example on the the native programs, the ways they are integrated, or interact with each other, etc. What about the UI layout, when it’s not about technical ways to represent options in lists, and so on?
What sort of influence does UIQ have over how the platform is used on the phones it’s owners will manufacture? In terms of hardware- profiles: hardware layouts, modems, board bandwidth, storage, ram size, processor choice, cache stack sizes, etc. Is it a two way street between UIQ and the phone manufacturer? Are there other criteria than generally available hardware involved, or just general concern for economic use of resources on mobile units, that counts more when limitations of different kinds are chosen for the UIQ releases?
What sort of views does UIQ have on incorporating garbage- collection routines, enabling c++ type exceptions, demand paging, and so on, into the design for future UIQ releases? Will this change how the platform looks and feels in terms of stability and speed? Will the annoying garbled screens between transitions, and when loading programs, ever disappear?
How high a priority is it for UIQ to make it easy for developers to create replacements for the “front- ends”, the today- screens, etc.?
Why isn’t there a public api for recording phone- calls?
Last ones - when will we see a theme- manager that can change how and where on the screen certain common elements are represented (such as shrinking the default menu- buttons, or changing their shape. Or gluing the more- lists to the top of the screen, or design them as a slide- in menu when clicking on the edges of the screen)? When will we see mappable stylus- gestures for basic program options (i.e., inside the program, mapped globally)? And when will it be possible to choose the background elements in various contexts, to better use transparency when designing themes (i.e., so a transparent screen of an application will draw the background picture on the today- screen, and so on)?
I’m looking for software which supports recording in mp3. I cannot find it. is there any?
Hey! Good and nice Expand Gps articles
I would like to know when a ir remote app will be released. I really want one
