Future UIQ 3 application prospects
In my my article published in AAS dated June 14th 2007, I listed 10 wishlist for UIQ developers to come out with applications compelling enough for UIQ 3 users to use them. If you havent read it yet, with all means, do 
Time moves on and I can see some developers are up to the challenge and released cool applications like iSkoot and Fring (for Skype), GDesk and LongCuts (Alternative App Launcher) and CorePlayer (playing OGG files and a plentitude of others!) and it is really great to finally see some “real” applications being developed. Not just J2ME Midlets.
During the last few weeks, the UIQ 3 application catalogue grew with some promising releases and I am really excited to see what’s next in the horizon. Here are some new UIQ 3 applications that have been released to the public quite recently :
1. BallRoom (A System Utility which gives some very useful indicator on the screen)
2. Slick (Currently in alpha, an alternative IM client, very LCGish in it’s UI, but useful)
3. iSilo (The document reader loved by many ex-Palm users)
4. GDesk (Take that Smartphoneware!)
5. LongCuts (More about this later!)
6. CorePlayer Mobile (’doh… if you havent got this installed, go get it!)
However, there are still many spots missing. I believe some developers are working very hard to bring high quality apps for UIQ 3 market but all these will take time to be materialized. If my memory serves me correctly, I have NOT seen any UIQ 3 application that can do the following :
1. Databasing (heh… database, I cant live without database!)
2. Media analysing (produces a summary report of a multimedia file without opening other apps)
3. Call recorder…
4. Profile… (Come on… there are 4 or 5 profile apps for S60 3rd Edition)
5. FTP app (Err… who says FTP is dead?)
So, what do you need for your UIQ 3 smartphones? It might be interesting to know what others need
